
BIOGRAPHY
Jan Willem Duyvendak is full professor in Sociology at the University of Amsterdam since 2003, after he had been director of the Verwey-Jonker Research Institute for Social Issues (1999-2003) and Professor of Community Development at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. With regard to his background training, he received his master’s degrees in both sociology and philosophy at the University of Groningen. Moreover, he did his doctoral research in both Paris and Amsterdam which dealt with new social movements in France. His main fields of research currently are belonging, urban sociology, 'feeling at home' and nativism. His latest books include The Politics of Home. Nostalgia and Belonging in Western Europe and the United States (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) and Crafting Citizenship. Negotiating tensions in modern society. (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012)
Jan Willem Duyvendak is hoogleraar sociologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Van 1999 tot 2003 was hij directeur van het Verwey-Jonker Instituut. Van 1996 tot 2002 bekleedde hij als hoogleraar de leerstoel Wetenschappelijke Grondslagen van het Opbouwwerk aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam. Duyvendak studeerde sociologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en in Parijs. Zijn proefschrift ging over (nieuwe) sociale bewegingen in Frankrijk. De laatste jaren richt hij zich vooral op 'belonging', stadssociologie, 'thuisvoelen', en nativisme. Zijn meest recente boeken zijn The Politics of Home. Nostalgia and Belonging in Western Europe and the United States (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) en Crafting Citizenship. Negotiating tensions in modern society. (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).
